A Thousand Words By Austin Miles

TEDx

Visual artist Austin Miles beautifully tackles the tough topic of self-love and body image with her breathtaking artwork. Through sharing her own journey to self-love, Austin urges viewers to mindfully “plant seeds” of thought in order to spread a diversity of images throughout the world. Austin is a practicing painter, graphic designer, and muralist in Richmond, VA. Austin uses color, texture, and distorted human and animal figures in her work, to embody her own stories; in an attempt to contribute to the conversation about Black female experiences. As a professional painter, Austin “Auz” Miles has shown her work in Richmond VA, Washington D.C, Atlanta GA, and Cusco Peru. In Fall 2017, Austin Miles won the Amendment Art and Literary Journal Art Award, where her painting ‘Enough’ was published in the Amendment Art and Literary Journal December issue. With a passion to contribute to the conversation about Black female experiences, Austin was chosen along with nine other muralists to participate in the Virginia Museum of History and Culture first mural exhibit, titled Fresh Paint, in October 2018. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

#AuzCan & #AuzDoes

are two social media hashtags that Austin created at the beginning of her professional painting career in Fall 2015. #AuzCan represents her belief in following her dreams; a constant reminder that she CAN. #AuzDoes represents the action of following her dreams.
